Unit Four

       Final Major Project

     22.02.2021- 14.06.2021

                                                                                        Artist Statement- Olivia Hilton

Are You Addicted? Social Media is an aspect of our everyday life, due to society being strongly influenced by the use of the internet. The concept of how reliant we are on technology is what my work is about. I chose to make my piece interactive for the audience, and highlight how controlled we are by technology, by only making my artwork accessible to the audience through technology. My work Is presented in a minimal format, implicitly applying the concept by displaying it as a ‘Instagram’ post, making my work come alive once the QR code is scanned, as the main body of my work is revealed and explored.

First Project Proposal

Project Title: How can wasted material be repurposed?

Section 1: Review

Throughout stages one and two of my course I explored multiple processes and topics, which allowed me to develop new ideas and experiments using different medias. Some of the topics I chose to develop with in my creative Practice are; Typography, Layout, Making three dimensional models to heighten final photo outcomes, environmental damage and manipulating the idea that a statistic can hold much more power if it is visualised. During my time expanding and innovating my ideas I worked with numerous medias some consisting of screen Prints, Drawing, Photography, three dimensional installations and clay. The development I have made during completing stage one and two have positively impacted many components of these stages. I can complete the process of brainstorming and developing multiple ideas through experimentation, so that I can then selectively choose the pathway that communicates my idea. Additionally, I have been able to apply the artists I learnt about in contextual studies, to my own work. This has enabled me to contextualise my work to a higher standard and generate influence from relevant secondary sources. My choice of Environmental Damage has informed my project proposal through the mass of idea generation and research pathways I can conduct on this matter. My immediate aspirations for this subject will be to research in a primary and secondary format how waste material can be reduced and repurposed.

Section 2: Project Concept

I want to focus the concept of my project proposal on environmental damage, domestically and commercially. My aim is to initially conduct research based on my ideas, which will then develop and contextualise through the process of experiments and outcomes. I will begin to explore this concept by looking at the context. How can materials be repurposed? To develop this idea I will use Dezeen magazine- out of the box article to innovate my ideas and enhance my idea for exploration and production. Other subjects I want to look into include; Ways that can help the amount of waste, Solutions for brands, how the mater is advertised in the media, found materials. Some of the artists that I will research to achieve progression on these ideas include; Mark Dion, Andy Goldsworthy and Alejandro Duran. Through out the consolidation process I will explore with new materials and ways of using them.

Section 3: Evaluation

The ways I will reflect on my work through out my final major project will consist of making a daily journal which will consist of my daily ideas, plans processes and any obstacles I face and how I plan to over come them. By doing this, I will be able to keep trace of the progress I am making and also evaluate the process and ways to develop the work I produce. Alongside this I will also uploading the progress I make daily along with annotations to my WIX website. Additionally I will also annotate all of my sketchbook work, to a high standard based on its concept context and development it has helped me achieve, by doing this process I will then be able to asses any research that I need to conduce to solve any communication issues that are stopping my ideas from being communicated. This will also successfully contextualise any research I do.

As a form of feedback, throughout my final major project I will also participate in a weekly critical analysis group. Which will consist of 4-5 of my peers assessing one another work against the grading outlines and discussing ways of which one another can progress on their body of work in a constructive manor.

The final stages of my evaluative and reflective process, I will conduct a final critical analysis evaluation which will be self initiated about my personal work, allowing me to summarise and interpret the progressing of which my ideas have formed. Alongside this I will also write a Artist Statement essay, using my analytic research of why this artist has impacted my project proposal.

Second Project Proposal: 16.03.2021

Section 1: Review

Throughout stages one and two of my course I explored multiple processes and topics, which allowed me to develop new ideas and experiments using different medias. Additionally, I have been able to apply the artists I learnt about in contextual studies, to my own work. This has enabled me to contextualise my work to a higher standard and generate influence from relevant secondary sources. My choice Social Media and the impacts it has on us has informed my project proposal through the mass of idea generation and research pathways I can conduct on this matter. Additionally, I also feel this current matter that is rising. My immediate aspirations for this subject will be to research in a primary and secondary format how absorbed we have become in technology, along with people opinions on how and why this has happened. I hope to generate and communicate whether social media provokes negative or positive reactions.

Section 2: Project Concept

The focus of my concept throughout my Final Major Project will be communicating the silent effects social media can have on us, for example addiction, the effects blue light has on our sleep, image editing (photoshopping) and more. I aim to successfully communicate this concept by initially conducting primary and secondary research to contextualize my ideas. I will do this by sourcing my research through artist inspiration and research enabling me to cover different aspects of the theme that other artists have not covered before. I also intend on watching documentaries such as ‘Social Dilemma- Netflix’ and ‘Why Sleep matters? With Matthew Walker- YouTube.’ Other sources I will use include, websites, magazines, and a primary questionnaire to social media users along with additional research along the way. As a way of communicating my concept explicitly, I will experiment with typography and layering of traditional typography print to explore the contrasting ways that this communicates my concept.  I would also like to incorporate the digital aspect of social media, and therefore produce some digital work such as an animation and experimentation with social media app layouts and semiotics. I think this will add depth to my concept because of the contrasting theme of how much time we spend online, contrasting with the concept being illustrated on the object that makes our screen time increase e.g. A mobile phone or whatever the audience is observing my work on. I will consolidate all my experimental, practical and research work on my WIX website along side my sketchbook.

Alongside this I will also write a Artist Statement essay, using my analytic research of why this artist has impacted my project proposal.
