NIKE - JUST DO IT

GERAMINE GREER AND MARTIN LUTHER KING

This project was all about Typography and conveying meaning and ideas in a visual way, therefore being a visual communication. The Copy lines and people I chose to explore in the light of typography were; Nike- Just do It, Nelson Mandela and Germaine Greer. I chose all of these because i have a interest in them therefore when communicating a visual message this would come in handy due to my inspiration. I purposely developed them all in different ways for example in different subject specialism areas, and using different methods to communicate, including; tonal drawing and exploring with text size and font, using a more graphical approach paired with drawing to contrast the two, and lastly the use of color and more expressive innovative mediums. For me my favorite is Nike- Just do it. As I feel the use of more expressive and Innovative mediums communicates a bolder image. I love how the use of string communicated the concept of the brand along with visually representing what the brand is more recognized for.

FACADE DIAGNOSTIC PROJECT

These are the final images from my façade diagnostic project, through out the exploration process of discovering how I wanted to respond to this process I explored shadow making and the way the material I wanted to work with fell and held its self. When it came to producing the final structure I knew I wanted to cast shadows onto my model was a way of emphasizing the structures characteristics and contrasting the negative and positive spaces. As you can see in my images I pinched the top sector of my the structure as a way of adding structure and assisting the material to hold its self, through one simplistic fold the whole way round, and I feel this changed the piece completely for the better, as it looked more sturdy and completed by being able to hold a position alone.

INVISIBLE SPACE EXPLORATORY PROJECT

I explored Artists 'Alexander McQueen' and 'Olafur Eliasson'. The reason I explored these artist was because of their diversity from other artists who covered similar themes to them. I was inspired by  Alexander McQueen's inventive use of materials for his pieces some including; glass, metal, plaster, leather and more, in addition to this I am interested in the way he works the materials in such a new and imaginative way, for example I was influenced by the way he forms dimensions or contrastingly enhances delicacy. I used this inspiration to fuel my 'small scale imaginary space.'

The second artist I took a interest into was Olafur Eliasson, I liked the themes and concepts he explores. These consist of elements; light, water, temperature and so on. Initially I was interested in these themes and recreating a atmosphere in comparison to visually creating a space. I wanted to use the audiences natural senses (touch, smell, hear and sight) to enhance a surreal atmosphere for my  'small scale imaginary space.' Despite this throughout the process of experimenting with creating texture and using materials that replicate a real setting I discovered what I really wanted to communicate with my 'small scale imaginary space.'

This process is shown below.

Here you can see the experiments and processes I went though to explore what different themes I could introduce to this project. For my imaginary space I decided to look at the formation of shadows in nature. Initially my idea was to look at recreating atmosphere, but through out the process of experimenting I evolved to this, after some research into the ' Among the trees' exhibition which gave me inspiration.

Artist research

SEQUENTIAL STORYTELLING- HOMELESSNESS

After brainstorming my ideas for this project and doing a lot of research along with statistic gathering I came up with a concept. It became clear to me after conducting some research on charities supporting homeless people, that the number of people affected by the issues relating to being homeless is a lot higher then people realize. The number of people who are homeless in the United Kingdom is 280,000 and this included rough sleepers and those in temporary accommodation. But this statistic does not include the hidden homeless, such as those hidden in derelict buildings, sofa surfers and those in squats. I feel this is a statistic that isn't hugely understood, and in other words is just another number that people doesn't perceive in a emotive or personal manor. Therefore my initial concept was to visualize the matter. I started by placing 280,000 zeros on eight sheets on A3 paper, with the intention of each zero representing a person. I feel the outcome of doing this was very successful, I places the sheets on a wall (as shown above) and it was very interesting to see my class mates gain a interest to what it was, and begin to ask questions which was what I wanted to happen.

As a exploration and way of using a different media, I decided to do a screen-print. I used multiple types of paper to see how the use of different materials effected this method. I also practiced applying more and less acrylic to the screen print to see how the density and opacity of the zeros effected the final look. After experimenting with this method I had a idea to use all of the methods and concepts I had explored in one piece. Therefore I ended up with the work on the right hand side. As a way of conveying the theme of homelessness and the need for awareness to be spread I decide to use a cardboard plaque in representation of what a homeless person may use to communicate with passers by. I then printed my screen print onto it with little pressure. I wanted the print to be fainter in some areas, to represent numerous things but mainly how such a large issue is ignored, this being homelessness.
